The Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas of Arequipa, is one of the main public spaces of Arequipa and the place of foundation of the city.

Located in the Historic Center of Arequipa, around it is The Cathedral of Arequipa in the north, the Portales of Arequipa to the east, south and west, The Church The Company to the south-east, The Church Our Lady of Mercy to the south- West and in the center of the square a bronze pool.

When the city was founded on August 15, 1540 by Garcí Manuel de Carbajal in the valley of the river Chili as “Villa of the Assumption of Our Lady of the Beautiful Valley of Arequipala” the city began to be built with her the main square.

Shortly after founded the town, Carlos V of Germany and I of Spain raised it to the category of city, by real cedula dated in Fuensalida (Toledo), 22 of September of 1541.

In 1844 there was a great fire destroyed almost all the old Cathedral, the Portales of Arequipa among others for which it was forced to rebuild. Reconstruction was the last big change I made.
